MAKE-A-DIFFERENCE-DAY 2017

MAKE-A-DIFFERENCE-DAY 2017

Please share the joy of the first Make-A-Difference-Day at Kent County’s new Recreation Center and Sports Fields located at 1683 New Burton Road, Dover, Delaware. Trails will need to be established, trees will be planted, and comfort amenities such as picnic tables and benches will be installed.

As you can guess, like all past Make-A-Difference Day projects many hard working volunteers will be needed to clear thick underbrush, trees, and discarded items. Once a trail-way is laid out, an underlayment and stone dust will need to be applied. Other volunteers will be needed to plant trees, stake and guy the trees, while other will be adding mulch to the newly planted trees. A number of volunteers will be needed to remove trash and discarded items.

There will be something for all ages, skill levels, and abilities for volunteers to do. Some volunteers enjoy coming as a group, others wish to come as a family unit, while others (such as military) came as a squadron or unit. Scout units and sports teams as well have enjoyed the experience of community involvement in making a place better than they found it. Other volunteers enjoy just being one-on-one with nature.

Volunteers are asked to arrive for check-in between 9:00 and 9:30 A.M., we will finish before 1:00 P.M. For those volunteers that have been part of past environmental projects Kent County wants to thank you for your service. For new volunteers we would like to have you enjoy Kent County’s newest Recreation Center and help with this area beautification project.

There will be something for all ages and abilities to do. Tree Planting, Trail Blazing, and Site Clean-up (trash, and unwanted vegetation). For safety, volunteers will be working under the supervision of "Team Leaders" and Parks Staff.

Please bring leather work gloves, hard-soled, lace-up shoes or boots (NO SNEAKERS, PLEASE), and a round-point shovel and a garden rake if you have one, we have limited rakes and shovels on site. Be sure to dress appropriately for outdoor work and the weather. A handicapped port-o-pot restroom and hot and cold drinks, breakfast snacks, and lunch will be provided to all who attend.

All participants under the age of 18 years must be accompanied by a pre-registered adult, parent, guardian, or volunteer and provide Kent County with a signed liability waiver/release form for the under 18 year old person. E-mail, FAX (302-744-9681), snail-mail or present completed and signed waiver/release to Parks & Recreation, 1683 New Burton Road., Dover, DE 19904, or bring it on the day of the event. It will save a great deal of time at the sign-in table if we have the form and your information beforehand. No person under 18 will be allowed to participate without a signed waiver/release.

If you wish to be a "Adult Team Leader"(over 18) you will be required to register in advance, receive a "Team Leader Number" and attend a lunch-time "Safety Training" the day before the event (Friday, 27 October 2017) between the hours 11:00 A.M. and 1:00 P.M. Pizza and sodas will be provided by Kent County. "Team Leaders" will receive a team leader ball cap after the training. Team Leader Training will be conducted at the event site. Volunteers will be assigned to Team Leaders on the day of the event.

To register as a Volunteer and/or a Team Leader and for more information about this special public event, call: Michael Rigby , Kent County Division of Parks, 302-744-2492 or e-mail him at: michael.rigby@co.kent.de.us

Volunteers (Not Team Leaders) may also register on the day of the event at the project site. All registered volunteers will receive a certificate of appreciation and possibly other appreciation gifts (sponsors pending and welcomed).

Please join Kent County Community Services on Make-A-Difference-Day 2017 at Kent County’s Recreation Center. Come celebrate and enjoy the experience of leaving a place better than you found it.

The Kalmar Nyckel: New Discoveries

On Saturday, November 4, at 10:30 a.m. Bill Hutchison of the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation will present a program at the Delaware Public Archives focusing on how the Kalmar Nyckel operated, with special emphasis on the navigation of the vessel, and the firing of the ship’s guns. Segments of a new film about the ship will be shown to reveal how these tasks were carried out.  The Kalmar Nyckel arrived in America in 1638 from Sweden and the settlers aboard founded the colony of New Sweden on the Delaware. This was the first permanent European settlement established in the State of Delaware and in the area that would become the City of Wilmington.  New documentary evidence has recently been uncovered about the fate of the Kalmar Nyckel which will be presented at the program.

Bill Hutchison, Lead Educator Emeritus for the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation, has served as a volunteer crew member since 2003. A retired educator, Hutchison was a social studies teacher and administrator in the Capital School District for 35 years. He was the district’s Teacher of the Year in 1989. In addition, Hutchison has been an instructor at Delaware State University, Wilmington University, and the University of Delaware. A Vietnam Veteran and life-long resident of Delaware, Hutchison received his BA in history from Salisbury University and his MA in education from the University of Delaware.

The program is free to the public and will last approximately one hour.  No reservations are required.  For more information, contact Tom Summers (302) 744-5047 or e-mail
