Wesley College’s Master of Occupational Therapy program will be attending the 2018 World Federation Occupational Therapists (WFOT) Congress in Cape Town, South Africa from May 21-25, 2018.
The theme for the conference is “Connected in Diversity: Positioned for Impact” and will feature leading experts from around the world, social events, and an exhibition.
Chair and Director of Graduate Programs in Occupational Therapy Dr. Varleisha Gibbs will be discussing two topics at the conference. The first is about disparities in the autism diagnosis for underrepresented minorities and the second topic discusses the connection between neurology and the sensory process.
Fieldwork Coordinator and Instructor of Occupational Therapy Eileen Scanlon and Assistant Professor of Occupational Therapy Dr. Taliah Cook, along with Wesley Occupational Therapy students Erica Horton, Jessica Hayes, and Lauren Bukowski received approval on their abstract for the Mental Health Collaboration with Connections Community Support Programs.
Connections Community Support Programs provide health care, housing, and employment opportunities for older adults with a history of psychiatric hospitalization as well as includes homeless services and substance abuse treatments.
At Connections Community Support Programs, Wesley students worked with case managers and faculty to go inside the homes to address life skills with consumers of the program.
The WFOT was founded in England in 1952 to recognize the valuable contribution occupational therapists have in health and society.
