KENT COUNTY EAST-WEST TRUCK FREIGHT ROUTE FEASIBILITY ANALYSIS
Dover, DE
01/17/2023 03:33 PM
Dover Kent MPO is pleased to provide a new study and corresponding publication, The Kent County East-West Truck Freight Route Feasibility Analysis Phase 1. Funded by FHWA, FTA, DelDOT and Kent Economic Partnership, this resource is intended to examine the existing conditions of east-west routes in Kent County, Delaware, and determine the most beneficial and effective improvements to east-west freight routes. The study also offers potential alternatives to the existing conditions; through these examples, municipalities may then consider changes in local infrastructure that will benefit both truck drivers and the community.

Linda Parkowski, Executive Director of the Kent Economic Partnership speaks to why the Partnership asked the MPO to do the study, as well as look to the future for freight in Kent County. "The East/West Freight Routes Study Phase 1 is a crucial step towards enhancing Kent County's travel infrastructure and making it a more attractive location for major employers in the warehouse, distribution, and logistics industry. The Rockport 2.0 study highlighted the importance of access to travel infrastructure, and this Phase 1 study will serve as a beginning to guide the county in addressing those concerns."

This study is one of two phases, consisting of the feasibility aspects of east-west freight in Kent County. It proposes both short-term and mid-term solutions that alleviate some of the challenges associated with truck movement in Kent County. It also proposes a viable east-west route that trucks will be able to use in the coming years, and in doing so, bypass downtown areas. The second phase, which will include the required engineering analysis, will be completed at a later date.
