Delaware Hospice Honors its Volunteers during National Volunteer Week, April 16 – 22

National Volunteer Week provides the opportunity to recognize the millions of Americans who provide volunteer service in communities across the country. At Delaware Hospice, 308 trained volunteers give selflessly to help people with a serious or life-limiting illness and their families.

Our volunteers are making a difference by providing patient visits at home and at the in-patient unit, running errands, grocery shopping, making check-in calls, sewing memory bears, crocheting blankets, baking cookies, fundraising, providing clerical assistance, mailing bereavement correspondence, volunteering at Camp New Hope, transporting patients, greeting visitors at the In-patient unit, and so much more.

“The hospice team would be nothing without our loyal and outstanding volunteers,” said Deb Haugh, Vice President of Strategic Initiatives, “They all add value to our organization every single day and we have a great deal of appreciation for all they do!”

It is federally mandated under Medicare that 5% of all patient care hours be provided by trained volunteers, reflecting the vital role that volunteers play in the provision of care. But even if the integration of volunteers was not required, we would still consider them critical members of our team. Our community is a better, more compassionate place because of their service.
