The King sisters, daughters of Catherine and Reese King, founders of King Crop Insurance in Georgetown, have again made a generous donation to the Delaware Farm Bureau Foundation. Donna, Jackie, Bonny and Nancy King visited the DFB Foundation’s Ag Lab, which was set up at Central Elementary School in Seaford on May 31. They presented a $1,000 donation check from the Catherine D. King and Edwin Reese King Fund, part of the Delaware Community Foundation, to Laura Simpson, manager of the DFB Foundation.

Catherine King continued the crop insurance company she and her husband founded in 1967 from the time of his death in 1972 until her own in 2015. She was joined by daughter Jackie in 1987 and later by Nancy and Donna. Bonnie is a registered nurse.

The Ag Lab, or “Ag Education Mobile Classroom,” is one of the projects of the DFB Foundation. Since its debut in 2014, the Ag Lab has reached more than 10,000 children in visits to schools and summer camps. Simpson said, “The Ag Lab is a traveling classroom that serves to educate young people about farming and agriculture. It is a fun, educational tool that allows kids to see the different aspects of agriculture and try it out for themselves.

“Students learn about the wide variety of careers in agriculture, how food gets from the farm to their table, the five food groups and the importance of healthy eating, and how farming successes and failures affect the economy. They have a chance to feel the difference in the various types of soil we have in Delaware, and then plant a seed in a cup to take home to see what it is like to grow their own food.”

The DFB Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that started five years ago with aims to build awareness, understanding and positive public perception about Delaware's farm operations; promote fresh, local food; and sponsor the Ag Lab.
