The laboratories of Peninsula Regional Medical Center (PRMC) have again been awarded accreditation by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Accreditation Committee based on results of recent on-site inspections as part of the CAP’s accreditation program.
Earning accreditation for the 46th consecutive year was the Main Lab at PRMC. Also awarded accreditation was the Respiratory ABG Lab. The lab at the new Richard A. Henson Cancer Institute at the Ocean Pines Health Pavilion experienced its first inspection since opening last year, and received accreditation with just a single deficiency to correct, which is a great testament to the quality of PRMC’s lab services for the Ocean Pines cancer community.
Kimberly Cuesta, MD, Medical Director of Laboratory Services at PRMC, congratulated her team for this national honor and recognition. “Both the new accreditation of the Ocean Pines laboratory and the re-accreditation of the main laboratory are a testament to the quality and dedication of our stellar laboratory staff.”
The PRMC labs are among more than 8,000 accredited worldwide by the CAP. Their accreditation program began in the 1960’s and is recognized as being equal to or more stringent than the U.S. government’s own inspection program.
The inspection is designed to ensure that the highest standard of care is being provided for all laboratory patients. During the survey, inspectors examine the lab’s records and quality control procedures for the preceding two years. They also examine lab staff qualifications, equipment, the overall facility and its management and the program’s safety record.
The College of American Pathologists is the world’s largest organization of board-certified pathologists and the leading provider of laboratory accreditation and proficiency testing services.
