Pedal Away Prostate Cancer Health Fair and Bike Race coming this Fall
Dover, DE
08/21/2023 09:23 AM

Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer among adult males in Delaware. This is alarming because Delaware’s level of cancer incidence is significantly higher than the national average.

Raising awareness of prostate cancer is the primary focus of the 14th Annual Pedal Away Prostate Cancer Bike Race and Health Fair. The event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 16, 2023 at Eden Hill Medical Center located at 200 Banning St. in Dover.

The annual event is sponsored by the Delaware Prostate Cancer Coalition (DPCC), and raises funds that support free community prostate screening programs, patient support groups and educational outreach. Founded in 2011, DPCC strives to uphold its mission of increasing awareness of prostate cancer and promoting early screening. Rafael Zaragoza, MD, formerly of Urology Associates of Dover, was instrumental in starting the coalition with like-minded community members including his son, Michael Zaragoza, MD, the current DPCC president.

The bike event is open to cyclists of all abilities, with prizes for top finishers. There are 2 distances, 25 miles and 50 miles, with separate start times for competitive and non-competitive cyclists. The race also serves as the 40K race for the Delaware Senior Olympics. Rider support/EMS is available throughout the race. Included in the registration fee is a picnic lunch, starting at 11:30 a.m. with prostate cancer speakers and trophy presentations.

Even if you’re not up to cycling in the event, you can support the cause by attending the picnic lunch, including pizza, BBQ and drinks for $5. A free health fair will be held prior to lunch from 9:30 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the finish site. Free PSA vouchers and prostate cancer screening registrations will be available. In addition, there will be free health screenings for vision, diabetes, skin cancer, and blood pressure.
