The Central Delaware Chamber of Commerce was on site at Chesapeake Utilities Corporation’s new Energy Lane Campus for a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday, September 27. The event celebrated the opening of the company’s newest facility located at 500 Energy Lane. The new facility houses Eastern Shore Natural Gas Company, the interstate natural gas transmission subsidiary; Chesapeake Utilities, the natural gas distribution operations; and the company’s Customer Care and Business and Information Services operations.

Among the hundreds of employees present, the event was also attended by Dover Mayor Robin Christiansen and several other dignitaries from across Kent County, as well as the developers of the 56,000 square-foot office building and 33,000 square-foot warehouse.

Chesapeake Utilities Corporation takes great pride in being environmentally-conscious.  The design of its newest building is evidence of its commitment to “going green” and reducing its carbon footprint.

“It’s exciting to be in our new campus,” said Shane Breakie, Director of Energy Services. “It truly showcases our company and our industry. Our state-of-the-art building is Green Globes® certified, utilizes natural gas heat pumps for heating and cooling, and we have the only natural gas fueling station on the Delmarva Peninsula.”

The new Energy Lane campus generates lower energy and maintenance costs by implementing state-of-the-art Yanmar natural gas heat pumps to facilitate the heating/cooling system. Daylighting is a key component in the design of the building; the placement of windows and use of reflective surfaces bring more sunlight into the office and warehouse to maximize visual comfort and reduce energy use.
Also located on the 20.6-acre plot is the company’s new public compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicle fueling station. Natural gas-powered vehicles are an alternative to those powered by gasoline and diesel, reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions and NOx emissions.

The new campus has already been awarded the Green Globes Certification by the Green Building Initiative for maintaining a higher standard of environmental integrity.
