Yes2Health is a program of the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, created and launched in the fall of 2018 to help create healthier communities. The program has grown rapidly and as a result has recently expanded its offerings to include cooking classes and in-person walk-ups! Yes2Health was developed to help Delawareans at no cost, who are at risk for one of the following: breast cancer, other cancers, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes or pre-diabetic, and/or a body mass index of 30 or above. At its inception, Yes2Health was an in-person health and wellness class followed by an hour of walking as a group. However, as a direct result of the pandemic and safety restrictions, the program shifted to a virtual format where participants logged on from home and walked independently. Surprisingly, as the program’s virtual presence grew, so did the number of participants across the state!

The new and improved weekly 30 minute educational programs include fitness, health, and wellness education to help participants live an active and healthy lifestyle.

Saying yes to a healthy lifestyle can be difficult, but it helps to have support from other people that are on the same journey. Many Yes2Health participants have shared not only how the program has helped them to gain new healthy habits, but also new friends! Yes2Health walk-ups are a great way to meet and interact with other Yes2health participants from all over Delaware.

“We believe that giving people the opportunity to join virtually for the health lessons, and walk at a time that is most convenient to them is attributing to the rapid growth” said Yes2Health Program Manager, Amanda Perdue.

Yes2Health aims to offer participants the tools to a healthier life, and its new virtual cooking series does just that. Yes2Health’s newest addition is the launch of its program called Yes2Health in the Kitchen. Yes2Health in the Kitchen is a no-cost, interactive online cooking class. Taught by Chef, Dee Iraca, founder of Eat Well Chef, the class will teach participants a new culinary skill and how to prepare a healthy recipe. Classes are open to the public with free registration, after registration, participants will be sent the shopping list, recipe and Zoom link. Participants do not need to be a part of Yes2Health to participate in Yes2Health in the Kitchen.

The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition thanks the Lieutenant Governor for her public support of the program. The recognition from Lt. Governor Long is particularly significant given her professional background. In her letter, the Lt. Governor says: “As the state’s Lt. Governor and a Professor of Nursing, I am very pleased that this program which was begun in 2018 advocates the concept that breast cancer reoccurrences can be reduced by proper nutrition and exercise. And I am pleased to advocate support for the hard work of the DBCC leadership and staff for implementing Yes2Health in our state.”

This fall Yes2Health is offering 4 new virtual groups starting in September. Find the date and times most convenient for you and register today! Registration is free, but required for class materials, and meeting Zoom link.

About Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition

The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition (DBCC) is a 501(c) (3) organization offering statewide programs and services. The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, Inc. empowers our community by raising awareness of breast health issues through survivorship support services, outreach and education, in order to facilitate the early detection and treatment of breast cancer.

Its vision is to create a community where every person diagnosed with breast cancer is a survivor, and fear and doubt are replaced with knowledge and hope. The DBCC also supports the National Breast Cancer Coalition’s advocacy efforts to end breast cancer.

Headquartered in Wilmington with offices in Kent and Sussex Counties, the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition’s programs reach diverse communities to deliver messages that address their unique concerns about breast cancer and early detection. Recognizing the barriers of language, culture, and economics, DBCC trains community advocates through their Peer Mentor Program, as well as works to help educate and encourage women and men to take responsibility for their health through breast health presentations and community health fairs. In addition, the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition helps those with low incomes and those with little or no insurance receive free or reduced-cost care
