Wilmington, DE
08/31/2022 10:00 AM

The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month 2022 with an exciting line up of events this September 15-October 15, in addition to its regular programs and services that support the Hispanic community.

Delaware has a Hispanic population over 91,350, with Georgetown, Elsmere, Milford, Seaford, and Wilmington having some of the highest Hispanic populations throughout the state. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in Hispanic women. The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition supports the Hispanic community in Delaware and the surrounding areas in many ways including providing interpretation and transportation services at screening appointments and hosting a Spanish-language breast cancer support group called “Viva La Vida” the first Tuesday of every month from 6:00-7:30 p.m.

On Saturday, September 24, 2022, the DBCC will host a Multi-Cultural Community Wellness Fair, with a special Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration. Attendees can receive biometric screenings and breast exams as well as other health screenings and resources. There will be performers including a Zumba class, Rueda dance group, and a singer. The event also features children’s activities and a variety of vendors. The event will be held at the New Castle County Library located at 3022 New Castle Ave, New Castle, DE, 19720 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

On Saturday, October 1, 2022, join the DBCC at the Milton Public Library located at 121 Union Street Milton, DE, 19968 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. This family fun event will feature free health screenings including breast exams and blood pressure exams, children’s activities, free food & drinks, live entertainments, and vendors.

About Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition

The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition (DBCC) is a 501(c)(3) organization offering statewide programs and services. The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, Inc. empowers our community by raising awareness of breast health issues through survivorship support services, outreach and education, in order to facilitate the early detection and treatment of breast cancer.

Its vision is to create a community where every person diagnosed with breast cancer is a survivor, and fear and doubt are replaced with knowledge and hope. The DBCC also supports the National Breast Cancer Coalition’s advocacy efforts to end breast cancer.

Headquartered in Wilmington with offices in Kent and Sussex Counties, the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition’s programs reach diverse communities to deliver messages that address their unique concerns about breast cancer and early detection. Recognizing the barriers of language, culture, and economics, DBCC trains community advocates through their Peer Mentor Program, as well as works to help educate and encourage women and men to take responsibility for their health through breast health presentations and community health fairs. In addition, the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition helps those with low incomes and those with little or no insurance receive free or reduced-cost care.
